Departed from South Hampton, England on the Charles on August 10th, 1918 for the United States Biographical Text Harry Howard Varner was born in Warrenton, Virginia, on December 18, 1885 to John David Varner and Leila Mortimor Ramey. While attending VPI, Varner participated in many activities such as editor of the “Gray Jacket,” member of the baseball, track, and football teams, business manager of The Bugle, member of fraternities Delta Tau Delta and Phi Rho Sigma, among other clubs, graduating in 1907 with a degree in civil engineering. Varner was also educated at the University of Virginia where he received a B.A. and M.D., and practiced as a physician before entering the service on April 21st, 1917, in New York City. He then served as a medic in the Army. Retiring as a Captain in June of 1919, Varner lead the rest of his life in El Paso, Texas, as a physician, where he died in 1970 of prostate cancer. Captain Lloyd Williams (</span><span class="_247o"><span>Virginia Tech</span></span><span>, 1907), from Berryville, Virginia, was assigned to command that division's 51st Company in the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines Regiment.</span></p> <div> <div class="_1mf _1mj"><span> </span></div> </div> <div> <div class="_1mf _1mj"><span>As they arrived on the field they found the French in retreat. When a French officer advised withdraw to a more defensive line Williams reportedly replied: "Retreat Hell! we just got here!"</span></div> </div> <div> <div class="_1mf _1mj"><span> </span></div> </div> <div> <div class="_1mf _1mj"><span>Days later, on June 11, 1918, Williams led an assault that routed the German defenders at Belleau Wood near Chateau-Thierry. According to a French Major's report, after he ordered Williams to withdraw, Williams told him to "go to hell." Later, when Williams had been gassed and injured by shrapnel and lay wounded on the battlefield, he told the approaching medics, "Don't bother with me. Take care of my good men."
